A $20 general income disregard is applied before comparing to the limit in most states, so you can be slightly over and still qualify. Figures use 2026 poverty guidelines.

What each program covers

  • QMB is the most valuable: providers cannot bill you for Medicare deductibles or coinsurance, and the Part B premium is paid for you.
  • SLMB and QI pay only the Part B premium (about $185/month in 2025), which is added back to your Social Security check. QI is funded annually and served first-come, first-served.
  • All three automatically qualify you for Extra Help with Part D drug costs.

How to apply

Apply through the Maryland Department of Health, not through Medicare. You can apply at the same time as full Medicaid; if you are over the Medicaid limit but under the MSP limit you get the MSP only.
